This one sucks for me because I hate spiders (Thanks Mike!). <br />
<br />
So I start by getting a b&w from Mike Norton<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SAnxnVlU9Sw/UE3j20z3OAI/AAAAAAAAALc/IKjaBhEHa9k/s1600/BP1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="258" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SAnxnVlU9Sw/UE3j20z3OAI/AAAAAAAAALc/IKjaBhEHa9k/s320/BP1.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<span id="goog_1369349787"></span><span id="goog_1369349788"></span><br />
The First step in coloring is the setup or what's usually called "Flatting."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XKNHij9Uaf0/UE3kI2brXqI/AAAAAAAAALk/ceq-OaDhgFY/s1600/BP2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="258" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XKNHij9Uaf0/UE3kI2brXqI/AAAAAAAAALk/ceq-OaDhgFY/s320/BP2.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
A lot of coloring tutorials don't really go much in to the flatting part but the way I like to do it a large item break up first. Here's and example of that first step (ugh... spiders).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JMMJNWectp0/UE3kpcQPysI/AAAAAAAAALs/VCZXK8Pz1tA/s1600/BP3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="258" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JMMJNWectp0/UE3kpcQPysI/AAAAAAAAALs/VCZXK8Pz1tA/s320/BP3.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here you can see that I've continued to break things up... There are a lot of Flatting tutorials out there so if your curious I'd do a search for one. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VL0Q2jABsXk/UE3k8v288tI/AAAAAAAAAL0/YMMgdeSsFrc/s1600/BP4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="258" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VL0Q2jABsXk/UE3k8v288tI/AAAAAAAAAL0/YMMgdeSsFrc/s320/BP4.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
With BP I always do the PUGS first... it's because I need to digitally paint on the dark parts first. Then I can go thru and render everything thing lighter. The pug is mostly colored with airbrush and a bit of cut & grad.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XsVCv2j2hgo/UE3lYDnqjmI/AAAAAAAAAL8/AZWaPyt9PN0/s1600/BP5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="258" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XsVCv2j2hgo/UE3lYDnqjmI/AAAAAAAAAL8/AZWaPyt9PN0/s320/BP5.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then the characters... I kinda hate spiders so I saved them for last. I'm also doing this tutorial because I hate spiders... I'll have to take a shower after this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bWD957TDDqE/UE3lxe8Or_I/AAAAAAAAAME/7LtcVRXlDNI/s1600/BP6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="261" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bWD957TDDqE/UE3lxe8Or_I/AAAAAAAAAME/7LtcVRXlDNI/s320/BP6.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
...and Finally the spiders and backgrounds. I wanted to put as much diversity into the spiders as Mike did the art for each one. <br />
<br />
so that's it...<br />
<br />
check out the final version with Lettering here<a href="http://battlepug.com/" target="_blank"> http://battlepug.com</a> ...and if you like BattlePug please help support the web comic by buying a Hard Copy collection of the first year printed by <a href="http://www.tfaw.com/Profile/Mike-Nortons-Battlepug-HC___402456" target="_blank">DarkHorse here!</a><br />

So every couple of months I put em up here...<br />
<br />
All this images are the property of DC Comics and blah blah blah... so respect the copyright but that said it's not like you could use these for anything other then the web... so we should be good.<br />

Everything that makes us human. -Jeff Durkin / Director<br /><br />"Art as a weapon" will look at the connection between street Art, Buddhism and Democracy by using the closed country of Burma as a case study. The film will follow street artists, a Buddhist monk poet, a punk band and a elementary school art class- giving the audience a peek into the creative process and the lives of the artists. Interviews include Shepard Fairey and Nobel peace prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi.<br /><br />This will be a “connections film” looking at the collision between the big forces that shape humanity- Art, Politics, and religion in both the eastern and western worlds. By combining beautiful cinematography, with Buddhist philosophy the project will illustrate the power Art has in the bloody fight for Democracy. Part art film, part political film, the goal is to continue spreading the word by using art as a weapon for peace in Burma.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/artasaweapon/art-as-a-weapon">Kick Starter page</a>angryfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06503651184431258031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14123546.post-18623141506367409382011-10-20T18:13:00.000-07:002011-10-20T18:18:32.331-07:00Thunder... <br />A tale of two cities through the eyes of artists Mike Giant (SF) and Mike Maxwell (SD). A film by Jeff Durkin.
<br />
<br />The Silent Comedy will perform before the screening.
<br />
<br />Film Description: Working Class is a feature documentary loosely based on Charles Dickens book "A tale of two cities." With San Francisco artist Mike Giant, and San Diego artist Mike Maxwell discussing themes found in Dickens 1859 novel that are just as relevant today. Religion, War, Family, History, and Art are chapters that tell the tale of the artists, the cities they live in and how history repeats itself. The two Mikes have been allies in underground art for over a decade and have gained respect for creating art based on the everyday people they see around them.

Each image is about the mood, personality and feeling within the image. If I as an artist can invoke some feeling from any of my images then I've succeeded. <br /><br />Vector: A style of art or creating imagery comprised of paths, which are defined by a start and end point, along with other points, curves, and angles along the way. A path can be a line, a square, a triangle, or a curvy shape. I use those paths within my artwork to create imagery base upon photos. These photos are either taken by myself or used with the permission of the photographer. Some of my subjects are separated from myself by countries, continents, languages and cultures. While others are friends or acquaintances that have inspired me to create art.<br /><br />The combination of photography and digital illustration allows me a certain flexibility with creating each hanging artwork. That said each canvas piece is unique and no image could be duplicated in the exact manor even if tried. I also never print the same size or exact color combination of any image. Each image is completely unique and should be treated as individual artworks.<br /><br /><br />Here's a few samples and rough sizes that are hanging:<br /><br />this is my largest at 6' x 3'<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/4170305867/" title="tallsocks by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2504/4170305867_041ee02333_z.jpg" width="640" height="346" alt="tallsocks" /></a><br /><br />this one is cropped a bit but hangs at 2'X3"<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/3362273832/" title="fset-006vector by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3601/3362273832_e7b5c03cdd_z.jpg?zz=1" width="513" height="640" alt="fset-006vector" /></a><br /><br />another large one this is at 3.5'X4.5'<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/3298014489/" title="bang by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3627/3298014489_c490f50b8a_z.jpg" width="439" height="640" alt="bang" /></a>angryfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06503651184431258031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14123546.post-47953306779107875292010-08-05T00:43:00.000-07:002010-08-05T01:00:29.720-07:00Superman: The Last Family of Krypton #1I'm excited to see this project out on the shelves... it's something I started least year and had to sit on for a long time. I am a huge fan of the DC Elseword books and am really happy to see one return. It seemed coming from reading mostly marvel and images books growing up they were a great entry into the DC universe. Here are a few of my favorite pages from this first book... there will be more. I've finished the 2nd and am about to start the 3rd... lots of work ahead of me.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/4862692774/" title="SMLFK 1_01 by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4118/4862692774_a1f66c239d_z.jpg" width="421" height="640" alt="SMLFK 1_01" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/4862074233/" title="SMLFK 1_04 by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4136/4862074233_8a5b3d543c_z.jpg" width="421" height="640" alt="SMLFK 1_04" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/4862074417/" title="SMLFK 1_41 by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4076/4862074417_17ac534404_z.jpg" width="421" height="640" alt="SMLFK 1_41" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/4862074661/" title="SMLFK 1_43 by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4114/4862074661_23856680f0_z.jpg" width="421" height="640" alt="SMLFK 1_43" /></a><br /><br />Written by CARY BATES • Art by RENATO ARLEM • Cover by FELIPE MASSAFERA<br /><br />• color by Allen Passalaqua<br /><br />Returning to a character he's long been associated with, legendary writer Cary Bates explores a different side to Superman's legend in an Elseworlds tale that hinges on the fact that while baby Kal-el has rocketed to the distant planet Earth from his doomed homeworld of Krypton, he was not alone. How does a world handle the emergence of the Last Family of Krypton as Jor-El, Lara and Kal-El make Earth their adopted home?<br /><br />a few links from other sites about it:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.newsarama.com/php/multimedia/album_view.php?gid=2283&page=1">NEWSARAMA PREVIEW</a><br /><br /><a href="http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2010/08/02/what-is-the-last-family-of-krypton/">DC Source blog</a>angryfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06503651184431258031noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14123546.post-5270534599956222102010-07-29T23:43:00.001-07:002010-07-29T23:54:09.879-07:00DETECTIVE COMICS #867...my partThanks to some hard schedules and San Diego Comic Con... I got to work a bit on DETECTIVE COMICS #867 with David Baron. The art team of Scott McDaniel, Andy Owens was great to color again too. I got to color a lot of their pages on the back up of Trinity last year and it was kinda like coming home. I colored the first half of the book with David Baron doing the last half and a bit more. Here's two of my favorite pages I did from my part.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/4842547605/" title="DTC 867.04-05 by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4084/4842547605_34e90cdda8.jpg" width="500" height="387" alt="DTC 867.04-05" /></a><br /><a href="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4084/4842547605_caa66f421e_o.jpg">Here's a bigger version</a><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/4842533521/" title="DTC 867.08 by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4154/4842533521_35016aa710.jpg" width="330" height="500" alt="DTC 867.08" /></a><br /><a href="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4154/4842533521_5720f653fa_o.jpg">Here's a bigger version</a>angryfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06503651184431258031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14123546.post-25650658402359288002010-07-25T18:01:00.001-07:002010-07-25T18:09:19.068-07:00SDCC photosHere's some of my favorite San Diego Comic Con photos... just did one day of photos this year.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/4828482867/" title="_ATP0173 by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4075/4828482867_c884fa3750.jpg" width="500" height="332" alt="_ATP0173" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/4828459735/" title="_ATP0144 by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4141/4828459735_cfacbda57c.jpg" width="332" height="500" alt="_ATP0144" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/4829077786/" title="_ATP0153 by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4141/4829077786_5872c69f48.jpg" width="332" height="500" alt="_ATP0153" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/4829096056/" title="_ATP0180 by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4080/4829096056_df28d6a0c5.jpg" width="332" height="500" alt="_ATP0180" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/4829082812/" title="_ATP0162 by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4077/4829082812_324602f891.jpg" width="332" height="500" alt="_ATP0162" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/4828481165/" title="_ATP0167 by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/4828481165_27e1c697a0.jpg" width="500" height="332" alt="_ATP0167" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/4828425341/" title="_ATP0053 by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4140/4828425341_e2ebcf214e.jpg" width="332" height="500" alt="_ATP0053" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/4828982542/" title="_ATP0036 by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4120/4828982542_9fa7e88505.jpg" width="500" height="332" alt="_ATP0036" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/angryf/4828992602/" title="_ATP0050 by angryf, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4136/4828992602_e466277dd5.jpg" width="500" height="332" alt="_ATP0050" /></a>angryfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06503651184431258031noreply@blogger.com0
